The first half of League of Legends Champions Korea Spring 2016 is winding down. CJ Entus find themselves, surprisingly, in a stronger position than most had thought, thanks to direction from veteran support Hong “MadLife” Min-gi, while the Tigers look to close out this first round without dropping a series.

Long Game: CJ Entus

After losing star mid laner Shin “CoCo” Jin-young to Longzhu in the offseason, CJ chose to bank on holding out until their young talent, Gwak “Bdd” Bo-seong turned of age. Unfortunately, this meant that CJ Entus would be without their true starting mid laner until March 1, 2016 — Bdd’s birthday. The team signed Kim “Sky” Na-heul in the hopes that he could hold Bdd’s place adequately until the latter player turned 17 years old.

CJ Entus had a similar talent bottleneck at AD carry with Jang “Ghost” Yong-jun also unable to compete due to his young age, and acquired Ha “Kramer” Jong-hun, formerly of Taiwan’s Flash Wolves. Hand-picked by Flash Wolves’ support Hu “SwordArt” Shuojie, Kramer was lauded for his mechanical skill and later became known for the decidedly questionable build choice of Wit’s End on a few of his AD champions. While Kramer wasn’t particularly bad, Flash Wolves cited communication issues — a common issue for hybrid rosters — and benched Kramer for their long-standing Taiwanese AD carry, Hsiung “NL” Wenan at the 2015 World Championship after one loss. Like Sky, Kramer was seen as a placeholder until his younger counterpart in Ghost became age-eligible.

In their first match of Spring 2016 against SK Telecom T1, CJ Entus was pitifully outclassed by the reigning world champions. They had little idea of what to do, when to do it, and their only bright spot was top laner Park “Untara” Ui-jin’s Teleport usage, which was obviously orchestrated by MadLife. The key to any CJ Entus success throughout this first half of the split has been MadLife, who has taken over micromanaging CJ Entus’ games in a way that the team likely hoped that he would do years ago with former AD carry Seon “Space” Ho-san. Previously a support who would take the pace of his laning partner, MadLife has organized CJ around protecting his new AD carry Kramer and attempted to ensure that Untara applies pressure elsewhere so Kramer can ramp up into the late game.

Unfortunately for CJ, while Kramer has performed well beyond initial expectations, Sky has been a notable disappointment, and jungler Park “Bubbling” Jun-hyeong has played abysmally for most of the split. In spite of these obvious weaknesses, CJ is in a stronger position in the current standings than most initially thought, managing to take games here and there off of presumably tougher opponents like KT Rolster. They’re not a good lineup, and the imminent arrival of Bdd is sorely needed, but opponents can’t make too many mistakes against CJ Entus or MadLife and company will turn them into victories for their team.

Today against KT, CJ Entus showed an incredible amount of growth and understanding of how to play the map compared to that first defeat against SK Telecom T1. MadLife is still calling the shots, but the team’s awareness of split-pushing and wave control, exploiting the mobility of Kramer’s Quinn, kept KT Rolster at bay for far longer than initially expected in Game 3, almost netting CJ the series victory.

Short Skirmish: ROX Tigers

No team in Korea looks prepared to take on the ROX Tigers. The Jin Air Green Wings were the second-to-last team standing in the way of ROX’s undefeated first half of the split, and they fell 2-0 today to the Tigers’ superior skirmishing and objective trading. Now the only squad left standing between the Tigers and first half perfection is SBENU Sonicboom, who have failed to win a single series throughout the split.

The Tigers’ jungler Yoon “Peanut” Wang-ho’s lack of warding, and the team’s overall substandard vision control has reached near-memetic fervor. However, no opponent has managed to challenge Peanut on this issue. The rest of the Tigers create as many opportunities for Peanut to invade his adversaries in their jungle as he produces for them, allowing them to kill their respective lane opponents or net early turrets.

Things may change slightly with the upcoming patches, particularly if the jungle meta shifts from a harder carry style back to a more controlled, passive start. In his last series and against Jin Air today, Peanut discovered that there are other versions of smite besides Chilling and Challenging, which Peanut had used alternatively to terrorize his enemies on their side of the map. It’s a race to see whether Peanut will adapt, or the meta will shift first. Either way, aside from a massive upset victory from SBENU, the Tigers will likely finish the first half of Spring 2016 like they finished it in Spring 2015, without a single series loss.

Riot Games Valorant

League of Legends(LoL) is the world’s most-played PC game, with over 100 million monthly active players. Each summer, teams from fourteen regions around the world come together to face-off with each other in Riot Games’ annual esports event, Rift Rivals. Rift Rivals will be held in various global locations between July 2nd-9th. One of the highlights of the event is the North America (NA) versus Europe (EU) clash that takes place this year on July 5th-7th at the home of the North American League of Legends Championship Series (NA LCS) in Los Angeles, California. 350 fans will join the players live in the studio, and the Rift Rivals: NA vs. EU event will be broadcast live in 9 languages on lolesports.com, Twitch, YouTube, and ESPN+.

The League of Legends Championship Series WarPigeon mascot

Last year, the NA LCS adopted a feathery mascot as its own after an appearance at the NA LCS Spring Finals in Vancouver, British Columbia. Since Finals, the aptly named LCS pigeon has regularly managed to find his way into the NA LCS studio, and even competed against pros in NA LCS Civil War in April.

In order to realize their mascot graphics vision for this NA vs. EU event, the team at Riot Games turned to Ross Video and their Frontier product for hyper-realistic results. Developed in partnership with The Future Group and based on the Unreal 4 gaming engine, Frontier is the latest generation of graphics rendering engine that helps take cutting-edge virtual studio and augmented reality technology into a new realm of realism. Commenting on the results, Gideon Ferber, Director of Product Management for Ross Virtual Solutions, highlights the importance of creativity to the esport fan. “The esports market has exploded in growth and it’s both competitive and demanding; audiences are always hungry for great-looking content that pushes technology boundaries and the content providers are looking for ever more creative ways to engage with the viewers. We’re excited to be working on the Rift Rivals project with Riot and I’m sure the fans are going to love the mascot and the impact they make on the broadcast”.

Dave Stewart, executive producer of the NA LCS Broadcast described the motivation to unleash the feathery beast. “NA Fans understand LCS Pigeon, they know he’s a fearless bird of prey, and not to be trifled with. Rift Rivals is all about the deep enmity between NA and EU, and the NA LCS Broadcast team thought what better way to strike fear into the hearts of our enemies than with a mechanized armored pigeon who dabs in the face of danger. We’re happy to bring LCS Pigeon to life at this very special event.”
